The new German coalition government has committed to former leader Angela Merkel’s plan to ban glyphosate-based herbicides from the end of 2023. An added goal is to “significantly reduce” emissions including methane and ammonia from agriculture, in the direction of climate-neutral farming. Germany-based Bayer protested the glyphosate ban, insisting on the chemical’s safety.

The three-way federal government is made up of the center-left Social Democrats, the ecologist Greens, and the libertarian Free Democrats (FDP). The government has also set a goal of achieving a 30% level of organic farming by 2030—providing increased financial support for farmers transitioning.

As part of a national food strategy, meat alternatives will be explored and advertising of foods high in sugar, fat, and salt aimed at children under 14 will be halted.

The government will also enhance animal welfare with mandatory welfare labels on meat, beginning in 2022—to cover actions during transport and slaughter. Video surveillance will be legalized.
