U.S. farmers planted seven million acres of non-GMO corn in 2019 and 4.3 million acres of non-GMO soybeans, according to Mercaris’s 2019 Organic & Non-GMO Acreage Report.
Non-GMO corn acres planted in 2019 were essentially the same as in 2018, while non-GMO soybean acres were down 1% from 2018.
Non-GMO corn acres were slightly lower across the U.S. Corn Belt, while there were increased plantings in other regions.
The number of non-GMO soybean acres increased slightly in Ohio and Michigan while acreage was down in many other states, causing the overall decline in non-GMO soybean acres nationwide.
Genetically modified corn and soybeans continue to dominate U.S. agriculture. In 2019, GM corn accounted for 92% of total corn acres, while GM soybeans were planted on 94% of soybean acres.
