Over 75% of German milk produced without GMOs

In 2023, over three-quarters of the milk originating in Germany was without genetical modified ingredients—72.1% was conventional milk, and 4.5% was organic. That high percentage (over 70% average) is consistent since 2020. In fact, GMO-free milk has represented over 50% of total milk supply since 2018, growing steadily since then to its current high.
The launch of the “Ohne GenTechnik” (Non-GMO) seal fifteen years ago, and creation of the German Association Food without Genetic Engineering (VLOG) (www.ohnegentechnik.org) have facilitated that rapid growth in non-GMO volume. To mark the anniversary, VLOG partnered with the Berchtesgadener Land dairy (https://bergbauernmilch.de/en/our-dairy.html); a pioneer in natural, GMO-free animal nutrition since 1974, it was the first dairy to process Demeter milk. Bernhard Pointner, its managing director, affirmed that GM milk is taboo, and that customers are nutritionally and environmentally aware and would reject GM milk.
The dairy company is a co-initiator of the Open Letter to the EU agriculture ministers, “Food Industry for Freedom of Choice,” demanding labelling and traceability of all products created with new genetic engineering tools. It was signed by 376 businesses from 16 EU countries, including industry giants REWE Group, SPAR Austria and dm-drogerie markt.
