The global personal health and wellness market is expected to increase 25% by 2025—raking in $7 trillion. While most consumers prioritize safe, high-quality dietary supplements and personal care products and cosmetics, the GMOs in these items often go undetected.

To move toward a GMO-free wellness industry, the Non-GMO Project has partnered with the United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA). It also hosted a webinar in February, “Coming Clean: Your Guide to Hidden GMOs in the Wellness Aisle.”

“We are shining a spotlight on biotech’s footprint in vitamins, supplements, soaps, creams, and much more,” said Megan Westgate, Non-GMO Project Executive Director. “Non-GMO isn’t just about food—it’s a lifestyle. It’s not just about what goes in your body, but also what goes on it. For consumers, we make it easy: Just look for the Butterfly in both food and wellness.”

Since the pandemic, the vitamin and supplement market has grown to $819 million. Demand for sleep wellness products, cleansers, and face masks continues to rise. Yet, consumers don’t understand the ingredients they’re looking at.

“Today we must all learn a new language—the language of synthetic biology—in order to make informed choices when choosing supplements and personal care,” said Loren Israelsen, President of UNPA. “[Especially] consumers who seek to keep a non-GMO house and body.”

The Non-GMO Project has seen a dramatic sales uptick for Verified personal hygiene/feminine care products, Verified internal OTC medicines, and Verified sun and insect protection.
