North American flour milling company Ardent Mills, and its new business unit The Annex, are investing in organic and specialty grains by purchasing a facility in Klamath Falls, Oregon. The elevator will enhance the company’s “ability to source grains from organic and conventional family farms in the region,” said CEO Dan Dye.

The acquisition “has the ability to impact not only Oregon and the Pacific Northwest, but also the entire country,” added Patrick Hayes of Oregon State University. The Annex is continuing to extend its grower network and public-private partnerships. In response to increasing demand for items for artisan baking, brewing and distilling, and food service/retail outlets, Ardent Mills will produce organic and non-GMO grains and distribute nationwide.

An upgraded facility at Ardent’s Denver mill will clean and pack intact grains, pearl barley, and dehull heirloom grains like emmer, einkorn, and spelt.
