Push Back Against Bioengineered Products Labeled “Natural”

GMO/Toxin Free USA is increasing pressure on regulators and food manufacturers over the use of “natural” labeling on products derived through genetic engineering and synthetic biology. The organization argues that genetically engineered ingredients, including products developed through precision fermentation and other biotechnology processes, should not qualify for natural marketing claims because they are created through industrial laboratory techniques rather than conventional agricultural production.
The campaign comes as federal agencies reevaluate food labeling standards tied to artificial ingredients and bioengineered foods. In February, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced greater flexibility for companies using “no artificial colors” claims when products avoid petroleum based dyes, including certain naturally derived alternatives. Consumer advocacy groups have argued that some replacement ingredients may still involve genetically engineered microorganisms or synthetic production systems.
The debate reflects broader tensions surrounding labeling transparency in the food industry. Under the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard, foods containing detectable modified genetic material must carry bioengineered disclosures, though highly refined ingredients often remain exempt. A recent federal appeals court ruling also challenged aspects of USDA disclosure rules that critics said allowed many GMO derived products to avoid clear labeling requirements.
Supporters of stricter labeling standards argue that terms such as “natural” risk misleading consumers if applied to products produced through genetic engineering or synthetic biology. Industry groups and biotechnology companies maintain that many precision fermentation ingredients are chemically equivalent to conventional counterparts and can support more sustainable food production systems.
