A study by the UK-based Soil Association reveals that younger generations, particularly Gen Z and millennials, are driving the demand for organic and sustainable food. Despite rising food costs and the cost-of-living crisis, these age groups prioritize organic products for their health and the planet’s well-being. According to the survey, nearly half (43%) of individuals aged 25-34 feel happier purchasing organic items, as they believe it positively impacts the environment.
Additionally, over 20% of this group view factors like sustainability, reduced packaging, and health benefits as essential when choosing food products, a significant contrast to only 9% of those aged 65 and older. The research also indicates that 41% of all adults consider environmental sustainability when making food-related decisions.
The Soil Association promoted Organic September, encouraging consumers to adopt small but impactful changes like buying organic milk or supporting local farmers. The organization’s senior advisor, Niamh Noone, praised the growing commitment among younger people to choose organic, emphasizing how these choices contribute to healthier and more sustainable lifestyles.
