Cereal maker WK Kellogg Co. signed a legal agreement with the Texas attorney general’s office to remove artificial dyes from its cereals by the end of 2027.
In April, Texas opened an investigation into the cereal company, alleging it violated consumer protection law by failing to fulfill a pledge made in 2016 to remove artificial dyes.
WK Kellogg announced in July that it would phase out the synthetic dyes, but the new legally binding agreement, said Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, represents the first time a food company has gone beyond a verbal commitment to remove petroleum-based colors.
WK Kellogg’s agreement with Texas—an Assurance of Voluntary Compliance—marks a step toward keeping food companies accountable if they fail to follow through on their commitments.
Paxton said in a statement, “I commend the company for doing the right thing … I encourage other food manufacturers to sign similar agreements to demonstrate their commitment to helping Americans live healthier lives.”
USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins posted a “Shoutout” to Governor Paxton on X for the “game-changing deal.” She said, “Kellogg’s is the first company to sign a legally binding agreement removing toxic dyes from cereal. More to come!”
