The Chinese government recently authorized the safety of genetically engineered wheat as it proceeds cautiously with the commercial production of GMO food crops.

The gene-edited, disease-resistant wheat will be used to manufacture pasta, noodles, and bread. China is the biggest producer and consumer of wheat worldwide.

China grows non-GMO crops for food but imports GMO crops like corn and soybeans for animal feed. The country wants to reduce those imports and increase domestic production of those crops.

As a result, the Chinese agriculture ministry recently approved a GMO corn variety with insect and herbicide resistance as well as a gene edited corn variety. Another GMO corn variety by Origin Agritech SEED also received approval.

However, Chinese consumers continue to worry about the safety of GMO crops.

According to media reports, the Chinese government will approve new regulations to label GMO foods this year.
