Non-GMO soybeans are increasing strongly in Europe and the EU, according to ENGA (European Non-GMO Industry Association) member Donau Soja, a non-profit promoting GMO-free sustainable soy protein.
The prediction is that planted soy areas will expand to 11.4 million acres—up 6.1% versus 2021—in Europe and 1.1 million in the EU-27 (up 11.7%). Soybean output might reach a record 10.3 million tons in 2022.
Despite the war in Ukraine, non-GMO certification programs are likely to expand in Ukraine from the 2022 harvest. Non-GMO soymeal prices and premiums dropped for three months straight in key non-GMO consumers countries, such as Germany and Austria.
Brazil’s non-GMO soy market is also strong—Mato Grosso, the largest-producing state in Brazil, saw a non-GMO production increase of 34% since last year. The non-GMO branch of the National Association of Soybean Farmers projects total non-GMO acres at 2.4 million acres, 2.4% of total acres.
