Hormel Foods, Kellogg’s introduce non-GMO soy meat alternatives

Move over Beyond Burger: Hormel Foods and Kellogg’s are the latest big players to enter the fast-growing meat-like burger market by introducing new non-GMO soy-based meat alternatives.

Hormel Foods recently announced the launch of the Happy Little Plants™ brand, a new plant-forward, protein portfolio created as part of the company’s first project under its Cultivated Foods umbrella. Happy Little Plants’ flagship product is a ground plant-based protein alternative containing 20 grams of non-GMO soy protein, and is 180 calories, with no preservatives, no cholesterol and gluten-free.

Happy Little Plants products launched in early September and have distribution in select retail outlets, with further expansion planned in the coming months. Numerous retailers and foodservice operators have expressed interest based on the exceptional taste, versatility, and simple ingredient statement.

Meanwhile, Kellogg’s brand Morningstar Farms® announced that it will introduce Incogmeato™, a new addition to its plant-based portfolio.Described as a “next-gen” plant-based product line,Incogmeato productsaremade with non-GMO soy. Products include plant-based burger patties, Chik’n tenders, and Chik’n nuggets.

Morningstar Farms has sold plant-based foods including burgers, chicken, breakfast sausage, and corn dogs for more than 40 years.

Hormel and Kellogg’s join Nestlé, which will roll out the plant-based Awesome Burger this fall and pork processing giant Smithfield Foods, Inc., which is launching a plant-based protein product line under the company’s Pure Farmland brand.

The Awesome Burger is also made with non-GMO ingredients including pea protein.
