Direct engagement between farmers and consumers is expanding as growers seek new markets and transparent supply chains. Recent data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service show that more than 147,000 U.S. farms produced and sold food locally through direct marketing channels in 2020, generating roughly $9.0 billion in revenue through avenues that include on‑farm stores, farmers markets and direct‑to‑retailer sales. Direct‑to‑consumer and direct‑to‑retailer outlets accounted for a significant share of this growth, reflecting broader consumer demand for traceability and connection to food origins.
One example of direct farm value‑added marketing is Roots Kettle Cooked Chips, a family‑owned company in Aberdeen, Idaho. The business grows and harvests its own potatoes using regenerative farming practices and then processes them into kettle‑cooked chips sold online and in regional stores. In addition to non‑GMO verification, Roots has received a Soil & Climate Initiative seal recognizing its regenerative agriculture practices, and company leaders emphasize the traceability that direct farm involvement provides, distinguishing their products from conventional snack brands that source ingredients anonymously.
Roots’ model illustrates how farmers can leverage value‑added processing and direct engagement with consumers and retailers to create differentiated products while reinforcing sustainable production practices. As local and direct food sales continue to evolve, such approaches may provide diversified revenue streams that support farm viability and consumer demand for ethically produced food.
