Emerging research is drawing attention to insects as a potential natural protein and amino acid source for organic poultry nutrition, offering an alternative to restricted synthetic supplements and conventional feed ingredients. A University of Arkansas research team led by poultry scientist Adnan Alrubaye received a nearly $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture to evaluate insect meals as sources of methionine, an essential amino acid that is generally prohibited in certified organic poultry diets except at limited levels. The study will assess insect meals from wild‑harvested insects and commercially raised crickets for their nutrient profiles, safety and effectiveness in broiler diets, as well as growth performance and meat quality outcomes.
Methionine is critical for lean muscle growth and feather development, yet organic producers face challenges meeting its requirements without expensive inputs. The Arkansas project includes on‑farm trials and economic feasibility analysis, aiming to provide organic poultry farmers with practical data on whether insects can reduce reliance on synthetic additives while maintaining production benchmarks.
Scientific reviews of insect proteins support broader research interest, noting that insect meals from species such as black soldier fly larvae, mealworms and crickets can supply high levels of crude protein and essential amino acids and may improve digestibility in poultry diets. These insects efficiently convert organic substrates into nutrient‑dense biomass, making them attractive sustainable alternatives to traditional plant protein sources such as soybean meal.
