Applegate Bets on Regenerative Beef

Applegate is expanding its regenerative beef sourcing strategy after an initial pilot underscored both the promise and complexity of scaling certified regenerative supply chains.
The company first launched a certified regenerative hot dog as a single product trial, sourcing beef from ranches certified through the Savory Institute Land to Market program. The pilot ultimately certified 35,000 acres under regenerative management but faced high costs and limited supply. Regenerative beef for the product was approximately five times more expensive than the company’s existing grass fed, no antibiotics ever supply, and infrastructure constraints including limited mid sized processing capacity added logistical hurdles.
In March 2025, Applegate transitioned its entire hot dog line to regenerative sourcing, adding 10.8 million acres of certified regenerative land globally, including 10 million acres under the Regenerative Organic Alliance program. Much of that expansion occurred in Australia and Uruguay, where large scale grass fed systems required fewer structural shifts than U.S. grain finished operations.
To incentivize ranchers, Applegate pays premiums across the whole animal, not just the trim used in hot dogs, absorbing higher short term costs in anticipation of broader market growth. The company is also testing omega six to omega three ratios across production lots to explore potential links between regenerative grazing, nutrient density, and consumer health positioning.
Carolyn Gahn, senior director at Applegate, acknowledged that regenerative scaling requires coordinated investment across certification, processing, retail marketing, and consumer education, particularly as price and health attributes continue to drive purchasing decisions.
