In a significant milestone, Lotus Foods—pioneer in heirloom, organic and regenerative rice cultivation—announced an investment of $22.5 million from Grounded Capital to scale the company’s economic, social, and environmental impacts. The investment will focus on the value chain, from sourcing new global rice cultivation communities to growing and diversifying its customer base.
The goals of Lotus Foods’ cofounders Caryl Levine and Ken Lee has been to create positive change in the rice industry. Since 2008, the company has created incentives for growing methods that help mitigate climate change and empower women, using the regenerative methodologies of System of Rice Intensification (SRI), what Lotus Foods calls its More Crop Per Drop® method. SRI’s priority is building soil health and supporting root growth; these practices have improved yields and increased farm resilience without requiring specialized seeds or agrochemicals. Methane emissions are reduced by eliminating rice paddy flooding.
