A new joint report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Meteorological Organization warns that extreme heat is increasingly reshaping global food production systems and placing growing pressure on agricultural productivity, labor capacity, and food security. The report states that rising temperatures and prolonged heatwaves are affecting crops, livestock, fisheries, and farmworkers across major agricultural regions.

According to the report, many staple crops begin experiencing yield declines once temperatures exceed critical reproductive thresholds, with maize and wheat yields projected to fall between 4 and 10 percent for every additional degree Celsius of warming. Livestock mortality and heat stress are also increasing, while marine heatwaves have disrupted fisheries and aquaculture systems.

The report emphasizes that adaptation tools already exist, including heat tolerant crop varieties, improved irrigation management, mulching systems, shaded production areas, early warning networks, and revised planting schedules. Researchers highlighted projects in Cambodia, Pakistan, and Jamaica where climate forecasting systems and heat mitigation practices helped reduce crop losses and improve resilience during extreme weather events.

Industry analysts say the findings reinforce growing interest in regenerative agriculture, drought resilient cropping systems, and localized food production as producers seek greater resilience against climate related disruptions. Agricultural economists also warn that persistent heat stress could contribute to higher production costs, lower yields, and increased food price volatility in coming years.
