USDA grant project supports regenerative agriculture markets for small and/or underserved producers

A Greener World (AGW), Rural Advancement Foundation International (RAFI) and Soil Health Institute (SHI) will lead a USDA grant initiative focused on regenerative farming for small and underserved producers. Applications are open through September 9, 2024.

Up to $4,000,000 is being awarded for the Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities project to include 100 producers across the US, USVII, and Puerto Rico. The grant is part of a $3.1 billion federal investment in 141 projects to provide help implementing climate-smart practices; to pilot methods to monitor and verify greenhouse gas benefits; and to develop markets and promote the resulting climate-smart commodities.

RAFI and SHI will work alongside AGW to assist farmers, ranchers, and landowners. National Young Farmers Coalition and National Co+op Grocers (NCG) will support through farmer and supply chain outreach and providing access to a network of 164 community-owned retail food coops.

Small and underserved farmers with full management of their farms who seek clear traceability will gain support for regenerative practices, improved farm operations, access to regenerative and climate-smart markets, and a growing network of farmers.

Growers will receive:

• A $1250 stipend supporting time spent on regenerative farm planning and emissions reduction;
• Auditing and certification with Certified Regenerative by AGW;
• Access to incentive payments averaging $10,000, dependent on outcomes and implementation of practices;
• Technical assistance through RAFI and customized marketing support through AGW.
