Kathleen did tremendous work to advance organic agriculture in a state dominated by GMO corn and soybeans and hog factory farms. Her Long-Term Agroecological Research trials proved that organic corn and soybean production could produce yields as good as or better than “conventional” corn and soybeans contrary to the propaganda of supporters of GMO agriculture. It wasn’t easy to be the organic specialist at a university so dominated by industrial ag. For more than 25 years, she and her husband Bob Turnbull organized the Iowa Organic Conference, which brought together Iowa’s organic farmers every November. Hopefully, the great work she started in Iowa will continue. I was fortunate to become friends with Kathleen and Bob, and they were long-time supporters of The Organic & Non-GMO Report.
