Industry leaders from across Europe gathered at the Non-GMO Summit 2026 in Frankfurt to discuss the future of non-GMO and organic supply chains as the European Union moves closer to deregulating certain products developed through new genomic techniques (NGTs).

More than 120 representatives from the food industry, research institutions, laboratories, regulatory agencies, certification organizations, and trade associations from 14 countries attended the summit. Discussions focused on maintaining non-GMO verification systems, traceability standards, and consumer transparency under the proposed regulatory framework.

German Federal Agriculture Minister Alois Rainer said non-GMO labeling has become an important tool for consumer trust and emphasized the need for reliable verification methods to maintain transparency. Austrian State Secretary Ulrike Königsberger-Ludwig expressed concerns about proposed changes that would exempt some NGT products from mandatory labeling requirements, arguing that reduced transparency could limit consumer choice.

Participants also reviewed developments in NGT detection methods, legal considerations surrounding coexistence between production systems, and new consumer research related to genetic engineering and food labeling. Industry groups presented early concepts for adapting existing non-GMO verification systems to address the potential introduction of deregulated NGT products into European markets.

Ukraine also highlighted plans to align its GMO regulations with European standards, positioning itself as a long term supplier of non-GMO agricultural products to the European market.
